About Schilderswijk

General

Schilderswijk Library was founded in 1976 to service the needs of residents of the city centre together with Transvaal Library. The library is located at a busy thoroughfare in the middle of the multicultural Schilderswijk quarter, densely populated by people from over 121 nationalities. This colourful local community is mirrored by the library where representatives from all corners of the world attend meetings, happenings and courses or individually go to in order to read a Turkish newspaper or to consult the internet.

Collections

Since the local community is so diverse the library holds collections in various languages. In addition to the Dutch collections the library offers books, newspapers and periodicals in Arabic, Turkish, Chinese and Urdu. The collection of information books is also focussed on the specific needs of the local residents and includes books on education, work, computers, religion and society. The children’s book collection is partly in Arabic and Turkish and incorporates books to improve reading skills for children up to twelve years old and an attractive selection of picture books for the smallest ones. Teenagers can consult information from the “Jongeren Informatie Punt” or Young People’s Information Point (JIP/YIP) presented in a special display rack. Primary and secondary school pupils will find a wealth of information books to be used for talks or papers at school, besides abridged books, author’s biographies and books on a variety of school subjects.

Computers and internet facilities

Schilderswijk Library has a digital information and education centre for all ages, the so-called “Telematicacentrum”. In the Telematicacentrum you can use the computers for surfing on the internet, word-processing or viewing CD-ROMs. Internet use is free up to the age of sixteen; above that age you pay the regular internet fee.

Secondary school pupils can use the library’s computers in the Telematicacentrum for preparing their homework between 12.00 a.m. and 15.00 p.m. From 15.00 a.m. onwards this space is reserved for primary school pupils to do their homework, under the supervision of a library professional. Power Point and Photo Shop are available. Primary and secondary school pupils are also welcome to become members of the Schilderswijk Virtual Library where they will find digital textbooks and readers, web links to special websites and a chat box for chatting with other pupils in the neighbourhood.

Learners of Dutch as a foreign language can exercise their language skills in the digital information centre with the aid of a variety of language programmes such as “Nederlands als Tweede taal (NT2)”, “De IJsbreker”, “Taalnet.nl” and Education Television (ETV).

Public transport
